Kiyomizu temple

清水寺

The famous Buddhist temple in Kyoto has had its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994. Its existence dates back to the 8th century when it was founded (in 778) but the present-day building was built in 1633. If you visit the temple, you will be encouraged to pray in the sanctuary and also to taste the Holy Water from the Otowa Waterfall. You can also visit the gardens which are very peaceful and offer a great opportunity for a bit of rest amidst the greenery. The terrace offers a spectacular view of Kyoto. The temple is surrounded by many cherry trees, so the whole scenery is especially beautiful during spring when the trees are in blossom (or during autumn when the leaves turn yellow and red). There are also many events organised at the temple, which are open to the public. Be sure to check the calendar on the official website so that you do not miss anything.
